The honest answer depends on what type of failure you're dealing with and how large the drive is. Here's a realistic timeline for each scenario.
Logical failure (most common): same day to 2 days
If your drive is physically fine but files are missing, the partition is corrupted, or you accidentally deleted something, recovery is usually a same-day or next-day job. The process is: image the drive, scan for recoverable files, copy them out. For a 500GB drive, that imaging and scan takes 2–6 hours depending on drive speed and how fragmented things are. We'll usually have your files back to you the same day you drop it off, or the next morning at the latest.
Physical failure (clicking, won't spin): 1–3 weeks
Physical damage means the drive needs to go to a cleanroom lab. The lab has to open the drive, assess the damage, repair or replace the internal components (read heads, platters if necessary), and then image it before any recovery attempt. That process takes time — typically 5–10 business days at most professional labs, plus shipping. Rush service is available at most labs for an extra fee if you're in a time crunch.
What slows it down
- Drive size. A 4TB drive takes a lot longer to image than a 250GB one.
- Bad sectors. If the drive has many bad sectors, the imaging software has to retry each one multiple times, which can extend the process significantly.
- How corrupted the file system is. A badly fragmented or damaged file system takes more time to reconstruct.
What you can do while waiting
Once your drive is in for recovery, there's nothing productive you can do to speed it up — the process is what it is. What you can do is start backing up other drives so you're not in the same situation again. The most common reason people need data recovery is that they had no backup. A $60 external drive and Windows Backup set to run weekly eliminates most of these situations entirely.
