How to Sell a Used Gaming PC Without Getting Lowballed

Selling a used gaming PC should be simple. It's not. Between buyers who ghost you, lowball offers at 40 cents on the dollar, and no-shows, most people end up either giving the system away or keeping it. Here's how to do it right.

Step 1: Know what it's actually worth

The biggest mistake sellers make is guessing. They see a similar system listed for $800 on Craigslist and assume theirs is worth $800. Listing price is meaningless — only sold prices matter. Check eBay's completed listings (filter for sold items) or use our free PC valuation tool which pulls current used market data for your specific components.

Common mistake: sellers forget that RAM prices spiked in 2026. If you have 32GB DDR5, that's worth $155+ on its own right now. Don't leave it out of your price.

Step 2: Price it to sell, not to negotiate

Set your price at fair market value — not 20% above it hoping to negotiate down. Serious buyers on r/hardwareswap and eBay know exactly what things cost. An overpriced listing gets ignored. Price it right and you'll get multiple inquiries in the first 24 hours.

Step 3: Write a real description

Include every component with the exact model name. "RTX 4070" is not enough — say "NVIDIA RTX 4070 12GB (Gigabyte Eagle OC)" if that's what it is. Buyers will ask anyway, and a complete listing filters out people wasting your time. Include: GPU, CPU, RAM (amount and speed), storage (type and size), motherboard, case, PSU wattage, OS, and any accessories.

Step 4: Take good photos

Clean the dust out before you photograph it. Use natural light. Show the inside (cable management matters to buyers), the back panel, and any wear. If there are scratches, photograph those too — hiding them leads to disputes.

Step 5: Choose your platform

  • r/hardwareswap — best prices, informed buyers, low fees. Requires some Reddit history. Shipped or local.
  • eBay — widest reach, but 12.9% final value fee eats into your price. Good for high-value systems.
  • Facebook Marketplace — fast local cash sales, but expect serious lowballers. Meet in public.
  • Howard Resource — we list it, screen buyers, and handle the transaction for $19.99 + 8%. You do nothing. Start here →

Step 6: Protect yourself

Cash or Venmo Goods & Services only. Never accept PayPal Friends & Family for a PC sale — there's no buyer protection and scammers know that. Meet buyers at a public place or ship with signature confirmation and insurance. Keep all your component boxes and receipts if you have them — it adds buyer confidence and sometimes lets you ask more.
