16GB is the minimum for gaming in 2026 — anything less and you’ll see stutters in modern titles. 32GB is the sweet spot: it future-proofs you for the next few years and costs about $90 used right now. 64GB is only worth it if you’re also running video editing or streaming software while you play.
What changes between 16GB and 32GB?
In most games, not much — but the difference shows up in the background. With 32GB you can have Discord, a browser with 10 tabs, and a stream running without the game fighting for memory. With 16GB you’ll notice frame drops when Windows decides to do something in the background.
What about 8GB?
Avoid it for a gaming build in 2026. Modern titles like Hogwarts Legacy, Starfield, and anything in the Unreal 5 engine regularly use 12–14GB of system RAM. You’ll be CPU-limited by memory before your GPU ever breaks a sweat.
