Geek Squad vs. Local Computer Repair: What You're Actually Paying For

People ask us this a lot, so here's an honest comparison. We're obviously not a neutral party, but we'll give you the real picture.

What Geek Squad charges

Geek Squad's published rates start around $100 for a diagnostic and run $150–$300+ for most common repairs. A virus removal is typically $150. An OS reinstall runs around $200. Their annual membership (My Best Buy Total™) is $199.99/yr and covers unlimited Geek Squad labor on your devices, which can make sense if you bring in multiple machines regularly.

What a local shop charges

Local shops vary, but in general you're looking at $25–$50 for diagnostics and $75–$150 for common repairs. Our diagnostic is $24.99 (credited toward the fix), virus removal starts at $79.99, and an OS reinstall is $49.99. Most repairs work out to roughly half of Geek Squad pricing for the same job.

The real differences

Turnaround. Best Buy typically books Geek Squad appointments a few days out and keeps your machine for 3–7 days. A local shop usually turns most repairs in 1–2 days, sometimes same day.

Who you talk to. At Best Buy, the person at the counter isn't the tech doing the work. At a local shop, you're usually talking directly to the person who'll be on your machine. If something comes up or you have questions, that matters.

Where your machine goes. Some national chains ship devices to a centralized repair depot — it doesn't stay local. At a local shop, your machine typically doesn't leave the building.

Accountability. A local business runs on word-of-mouth in a way that a national chain doesn't. If something goes wrong, they hear about it from neighbors. That's a real incentive to get it right.

When Best Buy makes more sense

If you have an active Geek Squad Protection plan on a device, warranty work goes through them — don't pay a local shop to do something that's covered. If you're already a Total Tech subscriber and the math works out for your household, stick with it. And if there's no reputable local shop near you, convenience may tip the balance.

When local is the better call

If you want faster turnaround, lower prices, someone to actually explain what's wrong, and a shop that's accountable to the community — local wins. That's true whether it's us or any other reputable independent shop near you.
