A new PC is exciting until you realize everything you need is still on the old one. Here's the checklist to move it all over and leave nothing behind.
1. Your files
Documents, Pictures, Desktop, Downloads, and any project folders. The easiest path is an external drive or cloud sync between the two machines.
2. Your browser
Sign into Chrome, Edge, or Firefox on the new PC and your bookmarks, saved passwords, and history sync automatically. Don't forget any passwords saved only on the old machine.
3. Your programs and licenses
Make a list of installed software before you wipe the old one. Note any license keys (Office, Photoshop, games) — some need to be deactivated on the old PC before they'll activate on the new one.
4. Your accounts and 2FA
If you use an authenticator app for two-factor login, move it to the new device before retiring the old phone or PC, or you can get locked out of accounts.
5. Wipe the old PC before it leaves
Before you sell, donate, or recycle it, do a full reset that erases your data — not just a delete. Your personal files should never leave with the machine.
