An SSD Upgrade Is the Single Best Fix for a Slow Old Computer

If a computer that used to be fine now crawls, the drive is usually why. A mechanical hard drive is the slowest part of any computer by a wide margin, and an SSD is the cheapest upgrade that makes the biggest difference.

How to tell what you have

Open Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) → Performance → Disk. If it says HDD, that's your bottleneck. If it's already an SSD and still slow, the problem is something else — see our slow-PC guide.

What you'll actually notice

Boot times drop from two or three minutes to ten or fifteen seconds. Programs open the instant you click. The whole machine stops "thinking" before it does anything. On an older laptop, it's the difference between replacing it and keeping it two more years.

SATA or NVMe?

Older and budget machines take a 2.5" SATA SSD — a big jump on its own. Newer boards take an NVMe drive that's faster still. We check what your machine actually supports so you don't overbuy or buy the wrong one.

Your files come with it

We can clone your existing drive so everything — Windows, programs, files — moves over exactly as it was, or do a fresh install if Windows is junked up and deserves a clean start. Either way, you don't lose anything.

Is it worth it on your machine?

On almost any computer from the last decade with a hard drive: yes. If the machine is truly ancient or has other failing parts, we'll say so — see repair vs replace. An upgrade only makes sense when the rest of the machine has life left.

Want your old machine to feel new? Let’s talk SSD.
