Custom PC vs. Prebuilt in 2026 — Which Is Actually Worth It?

The honest answer: custom wins at $800 and above. Under $600, prebuilts from Best Buy or Amazon are actually competitive and often not worth the extra effort unless you want to learn how to build.

Why custom wins at higher budgets

Prebuilt manufacturers cut costs where you can’t see them — cheap power supplies, proprietary motherboards that limit upgrades, and lower-tier cooling. At $1,000 a custom build gets you a proper PSU, a standard ATX motherboard you can swap parts into for years, and components chosen for your actual use case, not for margin.

Where prebuilts are fine

Budget office PCs, entry-level gaming rigs under $600, and anyone who doesn’t want to think about compatibility. The mainstream prebuilt market has gotten better. A $500 Best Buy machine for word processing and web browsing is perfectly reasonable.

The warranty question

Prebuilts come with manufacturer support. Custom builds from us come with a 1-year labor warranty — if a component fails within a year, we facilitate the warranty claim and reinstall the replacement at no labor charge. You also know exactly what’s in it.
