A laptop that won't turn on is scary, but it's frequently something simple. Go through these before you assume it's dead.
1. Rule out the charger
Try a different outlet, and check the charger light. If the brick has a light and it's off, the charger — not the laptop — may be the problem. Feel the cable for breaks near the plug.
2. Force a hard reset
Unplug everything, remove the battery if it's removable, then hold the power button for 30 seconds. Plug back in and try. This clears a stuck power state and revives more laptops than you'd think.
3. Is it on but the screen is black?
Listen for fans and look for keyboard lights. If it's running but the display is dark, the issue is the screen or backlight, not the whole machine. Plug into an external monitor to confirm.
4. Charge it and wait
A fully drained battery sometimes needs 15–20 minutes on the charger before it will respond at all. Leave it plugged in and come back.
5. Watch for lights or beeps
Power light blinking in a pattern, or beeps on startup, are diagnostic codes. Note them — they tell us (or you) exactly what failed.
If none of that brings it back, it's time for a diagnostic. We'll tell you exactly what failed and whether it's worth fixing — before any work starts.
