5 Signs Your Hard Drive Is About to Fail

Hard drives don't usually die without warning. They give you signs first — most people just don't know what to look for. Here's what to watch for and how to protect your data before it's too late.

1. Clicking or grinding sounds

A healthy hard drive is nearly silent. If you hear clicking, grinding, or repeated beeping from your PC, that's a mechanical failure in progress. Back up immediately and stop using the drive.

2. Files are suddenly missing or corrupted

If files you know you saved are gone, or documents won't open that used to work fine, your drive may have bad sectors — areas of the disk that can no longer reliably store data.

3. Frequent crashes and blue screens

BSOD errors like "NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM" or "CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED" often point to storage issues. If your PC crashes and restarts repeatedly, don't ignore it.

4. Extremely slow file access

If opening a folder takes 30 seconds or copying a file feels like dial-up internet, your drive is working overtime to read data from damaged areas.

5. Windows can't find the drive

If your PC suddenly can't find your C: drive or throws "Boot Device Not Found" errors, the drive may have already failed partially.

What to do: If you're seeing any of these signs, stop using the PC and call us. Data recovery gets harder — and more expensive — the longer a failing drive keeps running. We offer data recovery starting at $49.99 — and no charge if we can't recover it.
