Pre-built PCs from Best Buy or Amazon are convenient — you order one and it shows up. But are they worth the money? Here's an honest breakdown.
What you get with a pre-built
Pre-built machines are optimized for one thing: profit margin. Manufacturers cut costs with cheaper power supplies, slower RAM, and smaller cooling solutions. You're paying for the name on the box as much as the components inside. That said — they work, and for basic office use they're often fine.
What you get with a custom build
Every dollar goes into components, not branding. You choose the CPU, GPU, RAM, and storage based on exactly what you'll use the PC for. A $1,200 custom build will outperform a $1,500 pre-built in most cases because there's no middleman taking a cut.
Custom builds also last longer. We use quality power supplies, proper cooling, and components matched to each other for maximum compatibility and longevity.

When custom makes sense
- Gaming, video editing, 3D rendering, or streaming
- You want it to last 5+ years
- Budget is $800 or more
- You want to know exactly what's inside
